I would look to the second half of the first paragraph as a roadmap for the passage. It tells us that while Dostoyevsky was indeed a realist (the second position ) he was a very different kind of realist from the radical critics mentioned. We don't actually get much or any discussion of the first position, that art should be separate from reality. The majority of the passage is spent discussion how the third position is distinct from the second position.
