Hi Samirah, our apologies for the very delayed response. Recently there was a new team assigned to work on the message boards so you should get replies on here much more promptly :)For this question, let's start by analyzing the stimulus.
Conclusion: The increase in blood pressure that occurs when people talk is from the psychological stress of communicating rather than from the physical exertion of speech production. Premises (the Why): Most people's bp rises during speech, but extroverted people experience smaller increases in bp and introverted people, who are more stressed when speaking. So how is this argument functioning? It's saying that because bp rises less for extroverts, it's probably to do with the stress of speaking rather than the physical act, since both extroverts and introverts do the same physical act of speaking, but there is a difference in how stressful it is to them.
Now let's look at our options. Remember for strengthen questions we are looking to make it more likely that the conclusion is true (that bp increase is from stress not the physical act).
A) This is saying bp medication doesn't have an effect on the bp increase from speaking, but this doesn't do anything for the argument because it doesn't get at the difference between whether its stress or the physical act.
B) Same thing, doesn't explain stress v. physical act.
C) Doesn't matter, because whether or not they sense the bp rise doesn't tell us why its occuring.
D) STRENGTHENS because if deaf people experience higher bp when they sign, then its suggesting it is the psychological act of communicating causing the bp to rise! It couldn't be the physical act of speaking that's causing the bp to rise because it specifies the deaf people aren't speaking, they're signing.
E) Again, irrelevant because it doesn't get at why the bp is changing during speech.
