Why not D?

Doesnt the passage mention that Typhlo dont become effective invade until the second year? So if the mites are already present, and then the Typhlo are introduced, wont they be ineffective for the first year?

Hi I am not an instructor but I will try to help. D) is wrong because we don’t know what will happen in first year if there is not already an abundance of the predator Typhlodromus. For the first year, maybe the best way to protect the pest cyclamen mites is to introduce foreign Typhlodromus or some other foreign natural predators. The article never mentions that in the first year, at the absence of Typhlodromus, pesticide is the best alternative. So we cannot make the conclusion that pesticide is the best alternative to Typhlodromus in the absence of Typhlodromus, such as during the first year.

A), on the other hand, has more direct supports from the passage. The article is essentially arguing that strawberry can be kept intact by allowing both cyclamen mites (pests) and Typhlodromus mites (natural predators) to coexist together harmoniously without the intervention of pesticide. Since strawberry is prevented from being damaged by the pests cyclamen mites when the natural predators Typhlodromus mites are present in the field with them, we can infer that both cyclamen mites (pests) and Typhlodromus mites (natural predators) cause no material damage to the strawberries.

I hope that it helps. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you.

With D, paragraph one implies the opposite of what this is saying. In the first paragraph, we see that cyclamen mites generally won't cause a ton of damage until the second year, and by them, the typhlodromus mites often have already subdued their populations. Thus, D is unsupported from the passage. A matches the information we're told in the first paragraph, so it's the correct choice.
