The passage isn't really covering the "rise" of realism after Mao- we are told that realism was already a potent force in Chinese art during the cultural revolution, and in line 9- even before the cultural revolution. Realism was already present in Chinese art during the Maoist period. Rather the passage focuses on two particular traditions that developed out of maoist realism. This constitutes more of an evolution than a rise.
