Figured how to do Argument Completion Drill by reading a post...
I was confused about doing the argument completion drills, and found a post that helped me figure it out.
There was a question posted Feb 2, 2021 at 1:27 a.m titled "Missing Premise/Argument Completion Drills." The student typed a question and one of the tutors responded on Feb. 6, 2021. The explanation was helpful.
I can also attempt to explain the first 3 drills. I'm not sure if your drills are numbered the same.
P1: X ->Y
P2: Y->Z
C?
First, we need to find a way to link common variables. If you make P1 and P2 a contrapositive you have
P1: not Y -> not X
P2: not Z -> not Y
Then, for the conclusion start at P2:
not Z -> not Y, which connects to P1: not Y -> not X: the answer is: not Z ->not Y ->not X or you can use the contrapositive.
Note: the answer on the card shows only two variables and the contrapositive. X->Z or not Z->not X
Drill 2:
P1: A->not B
P2:C->B
C?
to link them I used the contrapositive of P1 only:
P1: B-> not A
P2: C->B
Then for the Conclusion: I started with P2: C->B which connects to P1 B-> not A.
(C->B->not A) and the answer on the card uses two variables and it's contrapositive. C->not A or A-> not C
Drill 3:
P1: X->Y
P2: X exists
C?
There is no need to use the contrapositive because X is sufficient and is sufficient in P1. . Start at P1: X->Y
Conclusion: Y exists
I hope that helps and reduces frustration and confusion!
