What exactly is missing from B?
Can someone explain why B isn't the best answer here? Is it because it just the restating of Lessing's opinion and not the opinion/main point of the whole passage?

I think your reasoning is good, although I would add one point. I think the idea that artistic value is not dependent only on visible characteristics is well supported, but the idea that aesthetic value is not dependent only on visual characteristics is not. The aesthetics only refers to the look and feel of a work, which is all based on the visible characteristics of a painting.
