For exactly how many of the campers is it possible to determine exactly which sorts of items they purchase?

Can someone explain the reasoning behind the answer being 3?

I have my answer as four with: K, J, M, and H

Hi ChrisM,

I dont think we know which items J purchases. We know he has an R, and that he must have either an S or a T, but I don't think we know which of the two he has. We know he can only have one of the two, as M has more than J, but I think that J could have RT or RS.

I chose the answer choice that said two. How is three? I can only be certain which items H and K purchase. M could purchase all three items or just two, which still allows M to have more than J if J only purchases r. Is there something I'm missing?

Hi Abigail,

We actually do know that M has to purchase all three. Since we know that J has R, and that J has one of the two that H does not purchase, we know that J must buy at least two items. Since we know that M bought more than J, M must have all three.
