Which one of the following is an acceptable schedule for the training?

Rule3

Hi, Rule three: "Quinn is trained in the month immediately before the month in which Tran is trained." Rule three posits a block QT, and precludes the doubling of either Q or T. There's a rule that is phrased in a way that is designed to trick us into thinking that it is a block, such as the case is in rule 3 in this game; but it actually has a sufficient and a necessary condition. Meaning that, the necessary could double, or show more than once; the sufficient, on the other hand, is less likely, and in fact often cannot show up more than once because every time it (the sufficient) shows it guarantees the showing of the necessary which an outcome that would leave no spaces open for the rest of the variables that must be included based on a rule embedded in the text (such as every element must show at least once). My first question is: does the phraseology in rule three, in this game preclude both Q and T from showing more than once, because of the phraseology of the rule; or are Q and T precluded from showing twice for another reason such as being in a linear game or the text of this game? My second question: can this rule, phrased the way it is, be open to being interpreted in a necessary/sufficient relationship in other logical games contexts/types? Thank You Respectfully, Mazen

Hi Mazen,

The way the rule is phrased does not preclude us from having a doubling of the necessary condition. However, the overall setup of this game does- the setup tells us that each is only trained one time (albeit indirectly), and the rules tell us that we must have months in which nobody is trained.

To you second question, I think this rule could be interpreted as setting up a S/N relationship in another game in which we could have doubling. Great question!

Emil, thank you: having the assurance of an LSAT expert is invaluable in that it frees up time that would otherwise be taken by doubt concerning rules' interpretation and diagramming; and under the gun of the clock, this assurance makes a huge difference.

[No worries about mispronouncing my name. I know you mean well. (By the way, it's not going to be the last time :))].
