I would say that this is testing, at least to some degree, how well you remember the passage. However, I think this is really a test of understanding. If you read carefully and understand the passage, you should be able (most of the time) to recall what the passage told us.
That said, I find it helpful to keep in mind where the author said what. If, for example, the author mentioned some concept in the end of the third paragraph, I can quickly go back to that part and re-read it if needed even if I do not remember exactly what the author said.
