On questions like these, what is the best way to approach the question without running down the list of answer choices?

I would try to use the rules and deductions to prioritize the answer choices that would trigger the most other things. In this case, it looks like k and n appear in more than one rule, and we know a lot about those, so I would try out the answer choices with k and n first.
