With which one of the following statements would the author of the passage be most likely to agree?

Why B and not D?

Hi, I'm having trouble understanding how to go about answering this question and would appreciate guidance on the method on how to do that. Working through this question I was torn between B and D and both seemed like they fit the author's tone. So I'd appreciate clarity there too. Thanks!

Hi, B and D broadly fit with the two theories of literary analysis in the passage. B is more or less a summation of the goals of RRT, that we can gain more understanding of a work by looking at the ways that readers interact with it. D is more or less a description of the formalist approach, that the main goal of literary criticism is to find the true meaning of a work. Since the author is mostly defending RRT against formalism, we know that author would agree with B, and likely disagree with D.
