how does the stimulus exclude alternative explanations? I did not catch that at all in the stimulus.

The author knocks out two plausible alternatives to mothers recognizing their pups' calls. First the author excludes the possibility that the bats use some form of recognition other than their calls. Second, the author knocks out the possibility that the pups recognize their mothers.
