The new ideas for using local plants is in the end of the third paragraph, where Chinese immigrants were able to use a local mustard that Anglo settlers had treated as a weed. Line 54 shows that the immigrants laid the foundation for what would eventually become agribusiness with their ability to manage swampland, but it doesn't show that they had the knowledge of advanced scientific management or agricultural business practices that later became the techniques in question.
