I don't think we have enough support for it. I just don't see anywhere until he passage that indicates to me that the author thinks N's lack of formal scientific training makes his accomplishments and approach even more impressive

While I think the author would directionally agree with this, there simply isn't enough the show this to be the case in the passage.
