WHy would his companion ask what the tablet said, if he didnt read silently to himself. If I was his buddy I wouldnt ask him what he just read out loud if he just read it out loud. I would have been listening

I think your reasoning is correct- but make sure to check what the question is asking. This is a must be false, the right answer is something that is not true based on the passage. So, it is untrue that he was reading silently as you noted
