The author is attacking the common line that abstract art looks like something a kid could do by noting a study finding that people regularly think abstract art is more beautiful than the art of a child. The author then concluded that the study proves abstract paintings are beautiful.

The main issue here is that just because something is prettier than a kids painting does not make it beautiful in absolute terms.
