A vs C

I picked C, and I was between A and C. I am not struggling to see how A is correct, rather, I also feel that C gave an indication that the Author was relating the computer variables (A passage example) to the variables being the ants. Could someone help me with further distinction on why C is wrong, and A is right.

I agree that that analogy is being made. However, I think it's important to note which direction it is being made in. The author is saying that ants act like a computer. In this respect, she is saying that ants, living things, act in a way that indicates a degree of coordination and collective action that is similar to what we see in a Computer. This is not the same thing as saying that computers act as if they are alive.if we described the bits of a computer functioning similar to an ant colony that would be a better argument for C. But that isn't what the author did.
