Why is A wrong?

I was between A and E for this question, and last second changed from A to E. I can't quite realize why A is wrong. If there hypothetically was more fuel needed for the return back to Earth, wouldn't it be heavier therefore not able to return?

The author doesn't need to agree with A. Would it kill the argument if it took 1 percent more or less fuel on the return journey? What if the return journey was actually much easier? Since the author doesn't have to believe it, it's not a necessary assumption.
