I don't see how E would weaken it. The fact that some animals have common progenitors before the breakup of the supercontinent would require us to make a number of assumptions to make it even remotely relevant to the passage. The passage explicitly rules out the possibility of them having a common ancestor on the island and the americas, as the islands formed only after the breakup of the supercontinent.
