I tried the question before you explained and got the answer correct, but I did use the cause-and-effect skill to solve it. Is it wrong to keep using that skill on ordinary strength questions?

Not at all! Causation shows up a fair amount in arguments, and recognizing causation is a core skill you want to use, just like recognizing sufficient and necessary when it pops up as well.
