There is just no textual support for answer choice (D)--what evidence is there in the passage that "recent scholarly advances will attract increasing numbers of researchers"? The entire passage is designed to establish the "considerable progress" that has been made in this field. Consider, for example, lines 19-22; lines 26-33; lines 42-44.
