The first paragraph introduces the fact that Frida Kahlo's works have been "exhaustively psychoanalyzed, while their political content has been less studied." (6-7).

It continues, "Yet Kahlo was an ardent political activist who in her art sought not only to explore her own roots, but also to champion Mexico's struggle for an independent political and cultural identity." (7-11).

So this paragraph touches upon the idea that Kahlo's works would benefit both from psychoanalytic and political approaches because Frida Kahlo puts both her personal life and her strong political beliefs into them.

Thus, in the author's opinion, to accurately interpret Kahlo's works, one must look at psychoanalytic and political interpretations. Therefore, the author believes that the psychoanalytic and political interpretations combine in such a way as to enhance or emphasize the approach to Kahlo's work, i.e. they "complement each other" in interpreting Kahlo's works.

Hope that was helpful! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
