Rachel's point is that contemporary art has less quality than previous art. Why? Because contemporary artists are free of the constraints that bound their predecessors and "Great art can be produced only when artists struggle to express themselves within externally imposed boundaries."

James disagrees with Rachel's point--that contemporary art has less quality than previous art--and explains that "people today mistakenly think that contemporary art is generally inferior to earlier art" because people have always been critical of the art of their own time, forgetting all but the greatest art from past ears.

Clearly, Rachel and James disagree on whether contemporary art is of a lower quality than earlier art, i.e. answer choice (A) "contemporary art is of lower quality than earlier art."
