This is a Cannot Be True Question. The passage explains one reason as to why European music has had a strong influence around the world and why it is a sophisticated achievement: that the music does not depend on anything but itself, i.e. it is independent of its original function.

We are searching for the answer that Cannot Be True.

Answer choice (D) states: "Music that is unintelligible when it is presented independently of its original function tends to be the most sophisticated music."

Remember, the passage is trying to prove that the reason European music is so sophisticated is that it does not depend on anything but itself. However, answer choice (D) goes completely against this reasoning and states that music that does not make sense when it is presented independently of its original function, e.g. music that is not European music, tends to be the most sophisticated.

But, the passage is saying that the reason European music IS so sophisticated is that it is independent from its original function. Thus, answer choice (D) is not compatible with the passage, i.e. it cannot be true.

Hope that clears things up! Please let us know if you have any other questions.
