Michigan Bar Exam Information

Get Detailed Information About The Michigan Bar Exam Including Schedules, Grading, Reciprocity, Fees, Common Questions & More.

The Michigan Bar Exam consists of the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) as well as 15 Michigan-specific essay questions. While it uses components of the Universal Bar Exam, which has been adopted in most states, the essay questions are created specifically for Michigan-based test takers.

Multistate Bar Exam (MBE)

The MBE, which is administered on Wednesday, is developed and graded by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). This portion of the examination is an objective 6-hour examination containing 200 multiple-choice questions, which is divided into two 3-hour sessions during which 100 questions are administered.

The MBE tests 7 subjects: Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law & Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts. Any UBE (Universal Bar Exam) study materials can be used to study for this portion of the exam, since none of this content is state-specific.

Michigan Essays

The Michigan Essay portion of the exam consists of 15 essay questions prepared by or under the supervision of the Board of Law Examiners (or by law professors selected by the Board).

Subjects that may be tested on the essay portion include real and personal property, wills and trusts, contracts, constitutional law, criminal law and procedure, corporations, partnerships, and agency, evidence, creditor's rights (including mortgages, garnishments, and attachments), practice and procedure (trial and appellate, state and federal), equity, and torts (including no-fault).

The sales, negotiable instruments, and secured transactions articles of the Uniform Commercial Code, Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct, domestic relations, conflicts of laws, and worker's compensation may all be tested as well as part of the Michigan Bar Exam essay questions.

Grading

The NCBE (National Council of Bar Examiners) scores the MBE component of the exam.

Michigan total scores are reported on a 200-point scale and a passing score of 135 is required. The MBE and the Michigan Essays each make up 50% of the score.

Michigan Bar takers are required to take the MPRE (the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination and pass with a score of at least 85. It's one of the most rigorous ethics exam requirements in the nation.

Results

Results for the February exam are typically released in mid-May, while results for the July exam are typically released in mid-November.

Reciprocity

Michigan does allow for the transfer of MBE Scores, though all applicants will need to complete the essay portion.

Admission on Motion

Michigan does allow for admission on motion for those who've passed the UBE in other states for a fee of $800.
